Everything Starts With Prayer

Everything Starts With Prayer

How do you start a project? I have learned that it starts with prayer. Boy, I love the book of Nehemiah! Nehemiah was an amazing leader. Let me start and give you a little background on the book. Ezra and Nehemiah were orginally written as one book. The time that is was written was 446 BC. Jerusalem had been attacked by the Babaloyins, the city was DESTROYED; like New Orleans. Nehemiah was just an ordinary guy, doing an ordinary job, like you or I, but he allowed GOD to open his heart up and make a huge difference. The time is winter……

Bringing the Bible Alive

As we read the Bible, it always seems so far away, does it not? But, the situations, and the people are a lot like us today.

Take Nehemiah for example, they were a people living in a bad time, their city has just been destroyed as some of our cites are destroyed by situations beyond our control. The people back then were looking for the coming of a Messiah, as we are today. Nehemiah was just an ordinary person, just like you or I, but he opened up his heart to GOD as we should and started with prayer. GOD used him to accomplish an amazing task, as GOD could do in us.

So, next time that you think the Bible was sooooo long ago, really look at it, I am sure you will see things and realize were not much different.

Scripture

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Then I said:”O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s house, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

“Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.’

“They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” – Nehemiah 1:4-11

Thought For the Day

Now, that I have given you the historical facts of Nehemiah, let me give you the heart of Nehemiah.

Nehemiah is not just another book of the Bible, it is a personal journal of Nehemiah, we need to read it such. It is not just about rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, it is rebuilding a city, a home. This is GOD’s home here on earth, it was the city that HE was going to set apart and set as an example for all mankind to see.

When Nehemiah heard of the news of Jerusalem (1:3) he broke down and wept, mourned, and fasted. Nehemiah was not saddened for a couple of days, he was saddened and troubled for 3 to 4 months. But, the news that Nehemiah heard was 141 years old! This would be like us getting upset over the news that President Abraham Lincoln died…… it was old news. That is how much Nehemiah cared about the city!

Now, that we have looked at the heart of Nehemiah, let’s look at how he handled the task of rebuilding the city……. He started with prayer. The first thing he did is drop to his knees and PRAY. Not just any prayer, but, a heart filled with love, prayer. In his prayer, Nehemiah exalts GOD, asks to be heard, confesses his and the sins of his people (Notice how he did not put the blame on anyone). Quotes scripture from the promises that GOD had made his servant Moses in Deuteronomy. Then asks GOD to give him success….. what a prayer!

When you are facing a task….. any task. What do you do first? Do you start it with prayer? I would have to say that I would start to plan (Not pray), I would get everything lined up. I think that we all can learn from Nehemiah and how he approached his task, and how he approached GOD in prayer. Let me put a little “Food for thought” in you mind. Nehemiah/GOD accomplished in 52 DAYS….. DAYS what others tried to accomplish for 141 years. Do you think prayer works?

How Can We Pray For You Today?

Closing Prayer

Dear Jesus

Amen for prayer Father. I pray a simple prayer Father. I pray that we can all learn to just pray a simple prayer, not fancy words or thoughts, just love and words that we would ask from a friend sitting right in front of us. Father I pray that we can all just speak to You with an open heart and mind and casual words, words simply to our Father.

I love You and I pray in Your Great Name, Amen

This would be a example for when you feel like you are the only one in the world that is standing up for what ig good and right…. kinda of how Job must have felt..

You know the turmoil that is going on in my heart, mind and soul right now. My friends are casting me away because of my beliefs. They say that I need to be silent when it comes to speaking my mind these subjects like abortion. Well, who is going to stand for the unborn? They cannot speak for themselves!

Lord, You say it is wrong and I am standing with You on this. Lord, where are the men and women of faith? I am so distraught! I need core Christian friendships! I want to have those close bonds like Naomi and Ruth did, or like David and Jonathon did. I feel so alone, like Job did as his “friends” berated and accused him of being a sinner over and over again! Lord, please bring me some real friendships that will last into Glory! I am so thankful for Your Son’s precious blood that was shed for me! I love You! Amen

Death

Here is a prayer that you could pray after a loved one has passed.

My heart is grieving! I was not ready for my son to leave Earth yet. I know that You are not surprised by his passing and I also know that my son is with You right now. I miss him, Father we had a great relationship. He was there in my tough times and encouraged me. My son’s passing is taking its toll on me, Lord. Please walk beside me as I continue to grieve, Father. I am excited that he is with You, but I do miss him dearly now that he is not with me. Give me strength to get out of bed every morning and do the things that I am called to do. I am relying completely on Your strength right now because I have none. I love You, Jesus. Amen

depression

My heart goes out to anyone who is suffering from depression. I have been there many times and it is not fun. Our son took his life so I know first hand what you are dealing with. It is overpowering at times and can even incapacitate you. It is such a strong force that takes a huge toll on the body. It makes you not want to get out of bed. It makes you incapable of doing normal activities. It is a heavy burden for the mind. I want you to know that if you are suffering from depression that God loves you. He knows what you are going through.

Dear Jesus,
I can’t stop thinking about the fact that I only have a couple hours left before the funeral. This is devastating me, Lord. I can feel depression trying to take its hold on me. Father I hate feeling like this! I wish I had my child back. Lord, I know that when I am there I am going to break down and cry. Please wrap your arms around me and hold me through the heartache that is coming. I am so down right now. Lord, you have the power to lift this depression off of me and I pray that if it is your will that you would. If not, I know that every trial has a purpose and I want to learn from this if it lingers on. You are sovereign and I trust You completely with my own well-being. I love You, Jesus. Amen

Insight Into the Scriptures
When the Israelite’s gave gold to help construct the tabernacle, they would perform a wave offering. This was a way of offering them to God and consecrating the pieces for it’s purpose. It is estimated that 5350 pounds of bronze was used to construct the tabernacle.

As you are reading the scriptures, God calls himself many names. In Exodus 34:14 He calls himself Jealous, I really love that, the Creator of the Universe is Jealous of my time and attention. How cool!

Exodus 31:1-7
“Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory.” And the LORD said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.
“Then the LORD said, “There is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.

“Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.”

Thought for the Day
This passage of scripture has always made me jealous. How amazing to have The Lord pass by you and show you all of His glory. But as I read the passage over and over again, I realized that Moses was seeking The Lord, and he asked God to show him His Glory. At one point in my life I began to seek God and His will with every ounce of me. Since that time, God has been reveling Himself to me, maybe not in the way He did to Moses, but I know that I will never be finished seeking Him until I go home.

Did you notice how God responded to Moses? God did not say He was the Creator, Supreme Being, Lord of All. He responded as compassionate, gracious, slow to anger and abounding in Love God. That is the Glory of God.

When was the last time you asked God to show His glory to you? The more that you seek Him, the more that He will reveal Himself to you. God wants an open deep relationship with you, all we need to do is ask and seek.

Closing Prayer
Dear Jesus,
With everything in me I seek hard to find You Father. I pray that you will open my eyes and my heart so that I do find You and praise Your name. Father I pray that You help me to rest during my day and give You the glory. Please help me to be the one you want me to be and be there for others, so they see Your great love.
I love you!!
In Your Name I pray,
Amen
